Since the Tabernacle was opened as a centre for Performing Arts in 1986, The Machynlleth Tabernacle Trust has overseen several successive conversions and developments to its buildings. These include our seven art galleries now housed in The Ellis Building, Owen Owen Building, and Old Tannery, as well as the historic Royal House.

The latest of these developments, the Glasfryn Building adjacent to the galleries was successfully purchased in 2016 with the intention of converting this into a secure and enhanced artwork store for the growing Tabernacle Collection.

Our need for a dedicated and modernised artwork store is critical to the future of The Tabernacle Collection. As the collection continues to grow, our current store is becoming overcrowded, and we soon risk not being able to safely store all works of art.

The Collection

The Tabernacle Collection of over 400 works concentrates largely on artists living and working in Wales in the 20th and 21st centuries with a few exceptions such as a portrait by Augustus John and works on paper by Stanley Spencer and Percy Wyndham Lewis. Important Welsh artists include:

• Cefyn Burgess
• Peter Edwards
• James Dickson Innes
• Shani Rhys James
• Peter Prendergast
• Kevin Sinnott
• David Tress
• Sir Kyffin Williams.

The nucleus of the Tabernacle Collection is a small private collection that was transferred to the Machynlleth Tabernacle Trust in 1986. Since then, additions have been made through the Nora Gibbs and Mollie Winterburn Bequest; the John Davies Bequest; the Contemporary Art Society for Wales; and many individual donors and artists.

The Glasfryn Appeal - Stage 2

When purchased in 2016, a successful fundraising campaign meant that work could be undertaken to secure the exterior of the building. At the same time the ground floor foundations were strengthened to accommodate professional racking, and a staircase installed.

In part two of the project, we are now looking to raise £200,000 to complete the store. Funds raised will help to:

• Install the professional racking for works of art.
• Add necessary security features to the building perimeter.
• Install heating, lighting, electrics, flooring and alarm systems.

Please help us to secure the future of The Tabernacle Collection by donating to this campaign today.
All donations, whether large and small, will assist in preserving this important collection for generations to come.
