Description

Mervyn Levy introduced me to Josef Herman whom I visited at his home in Kensington. In his dining-room I remember seeing a strong Eastern European oil painting, full of colour and vigour, and Josef saying “I must keep that for the family. I have almost nothing left.”

He and I went upstairs and, on the landing, hung a painting of ‘The Miner’.

I said that I wanted something for Wales whereupon he took it off the wall and it was soon ours.
