One day we received a summons from Peter Prendergast: we were to drive up to his home near Bangor, North Wales. There, in his garden, overlooking the Menai Straits, was an easel. And propped up on the easel was the painting that he had chosen for us to buy to represent him in The Collection…

The fact that we had no money to pay for it did not concern him. The Friends of The Tabernacle immediately came to the rescue (as they have done many times) and this major work, as if by magic, became ours. The drawing for the painting was a gift from the artist later.
