MOMA Machynlleth is recruiting for a Freelance Art Curator to curate the annual Artistiaid Ifainc Cymru / Young Welsh Artists exhibition. To coincide with the exhibition’s ethos of supporting young, early career artists, MOMA Machynlleth are now looking for a young, early career curator(s) to curate the next installments of this exiting annual exhibition.

Background

Artistiaid Ifainc Cymru/Young Welsh Artists was launched by Museum of Modern Art, Machynlleth in 2020 as an annual exhibition showcasing the work of artists under the age of 30 from/living in/working in Wales. The exhibition aimed to introduce artists from across Wales to one another and provide a platform for early-career artists to exhibit their work beyond an art school/college setting at renowned art museum MOMA Machynlleth.

The exhibition has developed over the past 4 years, and in 2023 graduated to the museum’s premier exhibition space, the Owen Owen Gallery.  Since 2020 the exhibition has showcased the work of nearly 50 upcoming young Welsh artists.

Responsibilities

– selecting artists and artworks
– creating a detailed plan for the exhibition, including the selection of artworks, their arrangement, and any thematic considerations
– work with the artists to craft engaging and informative wall texts for each artwork, providing context and enhancing the viewer’s understanding of the pieces
– coordinating delivery and return of artworks
– working with MOMA Machynlleth staff on installation of exhibition
– promoting the project and annual exhibition on social media accounts

Time Commitments

The exhibitions open during MOMA’s winter season, typically during mid-late November with installation in early Novemeber.  Below is a rough outline of when the bulk of the organization and curation work typically happens:

March-May: select artists (via open call, art school visits, gallery visits etc.) and meet for introductory chat
June: meet with artists (visits/online/calls) to discuss rough idea of work(s) to be exhibited
July-late August: general administration, answering artists enquiries etc.
September-October: visit MOMA to plan exhibition layout, write/edit/translate exhibition texts, coordinate text for production with MOMA, coordinate social media takeovers
Early November – coordinate delivery of works to MOMA, unpack, layout and help install.
November – end of exhibition – continue to promote the exhibition
End of exhibition (late January/early February) – pack the works to be return and coordinate the return of works to artists

Qualifications

– Proven experience as an art curator, preferably with a focus on exhibitions
– Strong knowledge of contemporary art in Wales, and the ability to curate diverse and engaging exhibitions
– Excellent writing skills with the ability to create compelling exhibition texts
– Strong organizational skills
– Attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively
