Brenda Jones, mountaineer and artist, rediscovered her passion for art and crafts following retirement. Living in the heart of North Wales she took inspiration from her exploits and the environment to develop her own artistic style, drawing upon the wild beauty of the region. She now produces art pieces that incorporate naturally occurring materials and recycles relics from Wales’ industrial past. It was while studying the slates recovered from the roof of her house that she was struck by the surface quality of old slate – its colour and texture, enhanced by years of weathering on top of the millennia of its formation. Reflecting, also, on the industry and human endeavour that has produced the slates, Brenda was drawn to want to understand and reveal the history and working lives of the slate workers.
