Sarah Jones is a landscape painter who has lived in Ceredigion for the last 24 years. She spent much of her life moving around within the UK but now proudly calls Wales her home. Since retiring from a nursing career five years ago, she has immersed herself in the landscape in which she lives, sketching and painting to convey her connections with those places.

Her love of the Welsh landscape is captured in her acrylic paintings on wooden panels – the hard surface allows her to be expressive when creating marks, using a credit card to apply paint along with knives, twigs, sandpaper and any other found objects to give different marks to denote the textures found in nature. Sarah creates semi-realistic landscapes which invite the viewer to look again at the paintings to see the layers of feeling and connectedness within each piece, in the hope that they will feel those same emotions.

Sarah makes notes when sketching in the landscape, writing down the words that evoke the emotions and feelings of a place – these words are rewritten as a haiku to accompany the completed works.

The places she paints are all places that Sarah feels a peaceful connection with. She says “we live in such a busy, chaotic world and I can escape to these wonderful landscapes for some peace and calm. They transport me to another place and I can take that back to the studio with me, continuing that feeling until the painting is finished.”
