MOMA Machynlleth is recruiting for a Freelance Art Curator to curate the annual Artistiaid Ifainc Cymru \/ Young Welsh Artists<\/em> exhibition. To coincide with the exhibition\u2019s ethos of supporting young, early career artists, MOMA Machynlleth are now looking for a young, early career curator(s) to curate the next installments of this exiting annual exhibition.<\/p>\n

Background<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Artistiaid Ifainc Cymru\/Young Welsh Artists<\/em> was launched by Museum of Modern Art, Machynlleth in 2020 as an annual exhibition showcasing the work of artists under the age of 30 from\/living in\/working in Wales. The exhibition aimed to introduce artists from across Wales to one another and provide a platform for early-career artists to exhibit their work beyond an art school\/college setting at renowned art museum MOMA Machynlleth.<\/p>\n

The exhibition has developed over the past 4 years, and in 2023 graduated to the museum\u2019s premier exhibition space, the Owen Owen Gallery.\u00a0 Since 2020 the exhibition has showcased the work of nearly 50 upcoming young Welsh artists.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n

– selecting artists and artworks
\n– creating a detailed plan for the exhibition, including the selection of artworks, their arrangement, and any thematic considerations
\n– work with the artists to craft engaging and informative wall texts for each artwork, providing context and enhancing the viewer’s understanding of the pieces
\n– coordinating delivery and return of artworks
\n– working with MOMA Machynlleth staff on installation of exhibition
\n– promoting the project and annual exhibition on social media accounts<\/p>\n

Time Commitments <\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n

The exhibitions open during MOMA\u2019s winter season, typically during mid-late November with installation in early Novemeber.\u00a0 Below is a rough outline of when the bulk of the organization and curation work typically happens:<\/p>\n

March-May:<\/u> select artists (via open call, art school visits, gallery visits etc.) and meet for introductory chat
\nJune:<\/u> meet with artists (visits\/online\/calls) to discuss rough idea of work(s) to be exhibited
\nJuly-late August:<\/u> general administration, answering artists enquiries etc.
\nSeptember-October:<\/u> visit MOMA to plan exhibition layout, write\/edit\/translate exhibition texts, coordinate text for production with MOMA, coordinate social media takeovers
\nEarly November<\/u> \u2013 coordinate delivery of works to MOMA, unpack, layout and help install.
\nNovember \u2013 end of exhibition <\/u>\u2013 continue to promote the exhibition
\nEnd of exhibition (late January\/early February)<\/u> \u2013 pack the works to be return and coordinate the return of works to artists<\/p>\n

Qualifications<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n

– Proven experience as an art curator, preferably with a focus on exhibitions
\n– Strong knowledge of contemporary art in Wales, and the ability to curate diverse and engaging exhibitions
\n– Excellent writing skills with the ability to create compelling exhibition texts
\n– Strong organizational skills
\n– Attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively<\/p>\n
